Facebook and other social media sites are a big source of scams and malware

What are the issues with privacy on Facebook and why is this so important?

It is amazing the amount of seemingly inconsequential information that is shared on Facebook. Names and DOB, names and DOB of family and friends, pet's names, home towns, activities, hangouts, vacation plans. With enough of this type of information, unscrupulous people can infiltrate your life. Indiscriminate granting of friend status gives access to all this information and more, as well as information about all your other friends, to people you don't even know.

Being careful on Facebook and other social media sites is imperative. Proper privacy settings and care what information you provide, even hidden information, should not be taken lightly.

Scams and malware proliferate on social media sites as well. Click on a request to do a Facebook survey and you could be infecting your machine.

Here is an interesting site I found that is just about Facebook and the dangers that lurk there.   Facecrooks.com

I have not fully perused this site but have found the few articles to be quite informative. If you are on Facebook at all, you need to educate yourself.

Vipre and Malwarebytes, a powerful combo

Vipre and Malwarebytes teamed up some time ago to offer a really powerful combo of tools to keep your machine free of viruses and other malware.  For the computer handy individual, here is some info and links from Vipre to help you clean up your machine  should you become infected.

http://vipre.malwarebytes.org/

For the not so handy, remember to run your Vipre and your Malwarebytes frequently, keeping them updated.   (Click on the link for a step-by-step guide.)

Vipre will run automatically at night if you leave your computer turned on and connectected to the internet for updates.  Or you can run it manually and it will shut down your computer when finished. (Click on the link for a step-by-step guide.)

Running both take about 1.5 hours each on my home computer (I have 25 gigabytes of files to scan).   If I cleaned up my files and stored some, such as picture files, on thumb drives of DVD rather than on my hard drive, the scans would be faster.

Remember, if you subscribe to Vipre through CrexTechs and you become infected you can bring in your machine for a free cleanup.  (However, if the infection is too pervasive and can not be cleaned, a wipe and reinstall will be charged at our regular prices.  In this case, all data will be lost so be sure to do regular backups. )

July 1, 2011 will be remembered in Grantsburg for some time to come.  A super-cell storm clobbered us good.  They are calling it a down draft or straight line winds rather than a tornado but some of us are not convinced!!

CrexTechs is up an running as usual though.  We did not make it through unscathed but we are here to take care of our customers.  Come on over and check out the cleanup and bring in your machine if it needs help.  We are here for you!

Joan in the driveway July 2 wondering how this mess will ever get cleaned up.

One of our signs survived!!

Slowly but surely we are making progress!  Things are much improved today.  Come and see for yourself!!  We are busy fixing computers and stacking wood.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to family and friends for all the help.  We couldn't have done it without you.
